Counseling and Art Therapy

Therapeutic Approach:

My therapeutic approach is holistic.  I believe that your mental health affects not only your mind, but your body and spirit.  I treat the whole person not just the symptoms.

Therapeutic Methods:

Listed below are brief descriptions of some of the methods I use during therapy.

Client Centered Therapy:
Therapist provides an environment of empathy, unconditional positive regard, and acceptance.

Art Therapy:
Uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages. (AATA, 2009)

Strengths Based Therapy:
Uses peoples' personal strengths to aid in recovery and empowerment.

Journaling:
This method is not the same as simply recording the happenings in one's life.  To be most helpful one must write in detail about feelings and cognitions related to stressful events, as one would discuss topics in therapy.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy:
Based on the idea that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors, not external things, like people, situations, and events.  The benefit of this fact is that we can change the way we think to feel / act better even if the situation does not change.  (NACBT, 2009)
